Google and Social Networking.

Friday, January 23rd, 2004

I read a lot about ‘Social Networking’ on various blogs which I track. I don’t think I really know what the hoopla is about. [Actually I don't know about it because I am not interested in knowing more about it.]

Anyways, current BIG news in Social Networking is that Google is getting in to this business via site named Orkut. Now only God or Google folks know what Orkut means.

Btw I found one interesting thing. If you search for word Orkut in Google, You will find that it returns web page of someone studying in Stanford who goes by name Orkut. Google founders are also from Stanford. Hm……

Empower your Windows Explorer.

Friday, January 23rd, 2004

How do you copy folder in Windows Explorer.
You go to the ‘parent’ folder where the folder which you want to copy resides. You press Control+C

Then you go to folder where you want to copy to. You press Control + V.

Want to simplify this? How about Shortcut command named ‘Move To’, ‘Copy To’ folder on your context menu. [See image]

Then here is the way. Just change few registry settings and you are there. Click here to download registry file which makes the necessary changes.

Note: if you ever wanted to revert back to original, download following registry file and run to clear the context menu entries.

Enjoy!

Accessible HTML Forms.

Friday, January 23rd, 2004

Simon has written an excellent article on accessible forms for Site Point.

I knew most of the tricks there but he certainly displayed a better way to do certain things like using ‘addEvent’ code. Great stuff!

IE Security Issue.

Tuesday, January 20th, 2004

I had heard about the issue of IE not being able to display URLs correctly. I didn’t realise the seriousness until I came across this.

If you click on this link, it will direct you to Internet Explorer page. Rather it will make you beileve so. Actually it goes to the Exclipy.com page only. I, seasoned user, was mistaken thinking that site is legal. I wonder how this can create horrors for not so literated in computers. MS should patch this immediately!

Accessing Microsoft Access MDB file from Linux.

Monday, January 12th, 2004

Thanks to John, now We know how to read Access MDB file on Linux platform.

Don’t start dumping your windows machines, there are lots of limitations to this but still it’s workable up to some point. Btw, if you don’t have your own dedicated server, forget using this technique as it involves lot of non standards module installation.

Though, it’s a nice solution to keep in mind, may be some day you need it.

A real alternative??

Saturday, January 10th, 2004

Thanks to Anil, I found alternative to the extremely irritating media player named ‘Real Player’. It’s called Real Alternative. And it really is ‘real’ alternative! I installed it and it worked like charm. Installation is so transparent that the site which requires Real Player plugin will work without any hitch!

Now I can relax and listen to all great hindi songs on Raaga.

Meeting Harris once again…

Saturday, January 10th, 2004

Very interesting.

It looks like Harris was looking for me while I wonder where he has disappeared. He even posted a thread on Devshed.

You see the problem. He hosts my email at IP X.Y.Z.W. Now he moves email to another server A.B.C.D and send me mail informing the same. Now I can’t access my emails through X.Y.Z.W and find out that you have changed IP to A.B.C.D.! Too much!

Lesson learnt: If you are the one in control of email server, remember to inform the email holders in ADVANCE of new email server ip!

Glad to be in contact with you again, Harris!

India lost against Australia.

Friday, January 9th, 2004

In rather a sad ending, India lost to Australia in One day cricket match when they were almost near to victory. :( I think all our bowlers should go for training in batting!

Missing: My web hosting provider!

Mr. Harris from Broadcastzone powers my website and that too free! I have also done couple of projects with him and he is nice friend of mine!

But for last couple of weeks I am not able to reach him. I am not able to access POP server for phpkid.org and not able to check any mails! I hope he will be back soon!
